A SCARCE .40-72 (WIN) LEVER-ACTION REPEATING SPORTING-RIFLE, MODEL '1895 SLAB-SIDE', serial no. 2235,
for 1896, with shortened tapering re-blued octagonal barrel marked on the top-flat, MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN USA', dove-tailed fore-sight, buckhorn rear-sight, re-coloured central hammer, the top-tang marked 'WINCHESTER MODEL 1895', figured butt-stock with crescent heel-plate, later chequering at wrist, re-coloured finger-lever, walnut splinter fore-end with ebony tip and later chequering, the whole re-blued with some pitting under finish; TOGETHER WITH a Winchester factory letter (2)

Other Notes: The attached letter states the rifle left the factory in 1897. Hand written notes accompanying the rifle read 'Found in mining shack under the floor boards wrapped in leather at the Double Eagle Mine in Idaho City, Idaho in 1983.'
